_DOT MATRIX

These pieces start as an image that is edited into a bitmap, which is a pixelated approximation of the original. This image is then projected over a canvas and painted using different size dots using a spray can. This process is a macro version of the process that a printer uses to create images. The human eye will make this visual information into an image, and viewing it through a phone, digital camera, or at a distance intensifies the effect

_Girls

These paintings are hand stretched, primed and sanded 5 times before the painting process begins. Each piece starts as a sketch and is built up and transposed onto the canvas. Som1 uses a screen printing layering and registration style to stencil each layer of color. The stark white and colorful backgrounds set the base for a figure study to pop towards the viewer. The key components of the posed are echoes in the black line work that creates the figures itself. These paintings are finished with a few simple lines of spray paint that both hide and define the figure.

_PALC

Paintings according to the laws of chance: These paintings are inspired by a German DADA artist named ‘Hans Richter’. His work covered a multitude of topics, but the one that inspired this work is titled “collage with squares arranged according to the laws of chance”. This piece was created by dropping scraps of paper onto a base sheet of paper, then gluing them in place. Following with the goals of Dadaist movement which had heavy ani-war sentiments, Hans attempts to show the randomness of the horrors of war though a simple paper collage.  Som1 attempts to use the laws of chance to show a greater truth, that all things are random and bound by these laws. All things from a micro to macro level in our lives can be controlled to a certain percentage, but beyond that, we are subject to unknown circumstances. Unlike Hans, the goal of showing this randomness is to highlight the possibilities of thESE LAWS, NOT THE HORRORS. The Laws of Chance ensure that nothing can ever go according to plan, but viewing this as a negative is the only thing that bolsters a negative outcome…
